I drove back into work and went to my cubicle. Adam must have called Amir because I had a note on my desk telling me he and Kim Strauser were in the conference room waiting for me. I grabbed coffee in the break room and called the watch commander from my desk.

“Hey,” I said. “It’s Detective Homer Watson in homicide. I need a uniformed officer to monitor a suspect’s home for the next few hours.”

Captain Vorhees paused.

“Sure. What are we monitoring?”

“The usual,” I said. “Comings and goings. I want pictures of every car, truck, or van to enter or leave the premises. If anybody takes out garbage, I want the bags taken into custody. I’ll be meeting with the prosecutor about search warrants for the home soon.”

Vorhees clicked his tongue.

“You want open surveillance, or do you want us to hide?”

“Open,” I said. “I want our suspect to know that he’s going to get caught if he tries to destroy or hide evidence. And I want him to sweat.”

Vorhees asked for details, and I told him what I could. Carlisle lived on a public street, so we had every right to assign an office to the curb near his house. After the call, I found Kim and Amir flirting in the conference room. They stopped as soon as they saw me. Kim was thirty-five and had dark skin, curly black hair, and big brown eyes. She smiled and stood and held her hand toward me when she saw me.

“It’s good to see you again, Homer,” she said, shaking my hand.

“You, too, Kim,” I said, glancing at Amir. “Did my partner fill you in on the case so far?”

Kim sat again and nodded.

“He has, but we didn’t think you’d need a prosecutor just yet. What’s changed?”

“Pretty much everything,” I said, sitting across from the two of them. I told them about my visit to the Chase and about my interview and observations of Brian Carlisle. Kim shook her head when I finished.

“I’ve faced Carlisle in court. He’s a good litigator,” she said. “It’s hard to believe he’d kill a woman.”

“Smart people do lots of stupid things,” said Amir. “Just look at Congress.”

Kim chuckled.

“Carlisle wouldn’t have killed her without reason. What’s your theory?”

I leaned forward.

“A friend of Hailey’s said she had an older secret boyfriend. I think it’s Carlisle. The night she died, I’ve got video of them fighting. It’s possible the fight continued out of view of the cameras and spiraled out of control. ”

Kim considered and nodded.

“What hard evidence do you have connecting Carlisle to Bowman?”

“He was her lawyer,” said Amir. “So we know they had a relationship.”

“A professional relationship,” said Kim. “What about their personal relationship? If he’s her sugar daddy, there should be evidence. Late-night phone calls, racy text messages, things like that.”

Amir looked at me, and I raised my eyebrows.

“They texted each other, but their messages seemed almost impersonal. They talked on the phone, but we don’t know the content of those calls. The video from the Chase’s security cameras, though, is pretty clear.
